The private Republic of San Marino, located in Northern Italy along the Eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, lies high in the mountains. One of the oldest republics in the world, San Marino is small yet filled with very wonderful treasures, such as romantic castles, historic sites and spectacular views of the sea. Only 23 km. from Rimini, is San Marino, the quaintly independent Republic, perched on top of Mount Titan. It is the world's smallest republic and claims to be Europe's oldest existing state. San Marino is proud of the notable Basilica of Santo Marino, towers (14th-16th cent.) built on each of the three peaks of Mt. Titano, the Gothic government house and several art museums. There is a bust of Abraham Lincoln, who accepted honorary citizenship of the republic, in 1861. It is a charming town, with narrow streets opening onto medieval "piazze" (plazas). WHAT'S HAPPENING in SAN MARINO

One-tenth the size of New York City, San Marino is surrounded by Italy proper. It is situated in the Apennines, a little inland from the Adriatic Sea, near Rimini. According to tradition, San Marino was founded about A.D.350 and had the good luck to stay out of the many wars and feuds on the Italian peninsula, for centuries. San Marino is the oldest republic in the world.

In San Marino, a wedding can take place in Palazzo Pubblico. Usually weddings are held in one of two beautiful rooms, the Sala del Consiglio Dei XII or in the Sala del Consiglio grande (it depends on the availability and the number of guests).

Weddings are celebrated each 1st Saturday of the month and each 3rd Monday of the month - and by request, any work day in the month. The official "declaration" takes place a day before the ceremony. The nearest airports to San Marino are in Rimini, Forlì, Bologna and Ancona.
