From the outset, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, with its V12 front engine and traditional barchetta cut, was created to be a race car. It is a unique recreation of special Ferrari models from the past. It was deliberately designed to be more provocative and less rational than the rest of the company’s current range.
The 550 Barchetta Pininfarina started the history of the V12 front-engined Ferraris. It aimed exclusively at open-air use, providing just a manual soft-top for emergency use.
Its design inspired other V12 Ferrari models such as 166 MM, 250 GT California and 365 GTS Daytona.
Only a limited number of 448 vehicles were produced in Maranello in 2001, each individually numbered and carrying a plaque inside with the car's own serial number and Sergio Pininfarina's signature.
