The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi
The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi (St Francis), the mother church of the Franciscan Order, is a World Heritage Site in Assisi (Umbria). The lower and upper churches have been decorated by the greatest late medieval Roman, Umbrian and Tuscan artists of their time, giving these churches an unequaled importance in the development of Italian art. The lower church has frescos by renowned late-medieval artists, such as Cimabue and Giotto; in the upper church are a series frescoes depicting scenes in the life of St Francis attributed to Giotto and his circle.
Priors' Palace in Perugia
The Priors' Palace, a superb expression of the city's municipal spirit, was built between the 13th and the 15th centuries. The National Gallery of Umbria, is located in this palace, and contains Umbria's most important collection of paintings
Urbino
Of the Marche region's principal towns, Urbino is our favourite. This jewel of a renaissance city and academic center remains little changed from the days when Duke Federico of Montefeltro set up his celebrated court here, in the second half of the 15th century. The magnificent Ducal Palace is said to have been copied by Walt Disney for Sleeping Beauty's Castle
