Miramare Castle
Miramare Castle, converted into a museum, is an excellent example of a 19th Century royal residence. The interior furniture and decorations are genuine period pieces. The extensive park of 22 hectares (54 acres), located on the seashore, is one of Europe's most fascinating properties. The cliff, on which it was built, had no vegetation and was cultivated with numerous beautiful tropical species of trees and plants. A lovely destination.
Aquileia
If you are interested in ancient Rome, you should visit Aquileia and see the well-preserved ruins of a strategic ancient outpost. Founded in 181 BC, Aquileia remains the most important archeological site in northern Italy, and it is well worth visiting the forum, circus, cemetery and river port. Western Europe's finest early Christian mosaics, in the form of an unforgettable 700 square-yard pavement, are preserved in the basilica. Be sure to visit the stunning Byzantine frescoes in the crypt. The Archeological and Paleo-Christian Museums are both artistic treasures troves.
