Barcolana (October)
On the second Sunday of October, the Gulf of Trieste hosts one of the largest and most spectacular events on the sailing calendar. The Barcolana is distinguished by the participation of all classes of sailing boats. In recent years the increasing numbers of participants has reached over one thousand.
Far East Film Festival (April in Udine)
This festival is the world's largest showcase of Asian popular cinema. More than 60 feature films are shown in 9 days of tightly scheduled screenings. There is a chance to meet the artists and hear daily themed panel discussions and important retrospectives.
Open Cellars (May)
This celebration of viniculture gives wine-lovers the opportunity to immerse themselves in a world they love and appreciate. Wine-lovers can follow their wish to "drink well" and also to discover the most beautiful of wine-growing areas. "Open Cellars" transforms the region into a fermenting place for thousands of enotourists, who can visit the wineries associated with the Wine Tourism Movement. At the same time, one can discover the best in art, culture, nature, and gastronomy that the Friuli Venezia Giulia has to offer.
Aria di Festa (June in San Daniele)
The International Ham Fair is open to all and part of the tradition of San Daniele. The ham is the most famous, tasty, sweet ham! Ask anyone in the area why their ham is so good and they will tell you it is the combination of fresh air from the nearby Alps, humidity from the Adriatic coast, salt from the sea and the quality of the pigs themselves.
Operetta Festival (July-August in Trieste)
This festival offers a fantastic program of past and present works, at the Theatre. From the Austrian tradition with works of Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár and Carl Millöcker, to the modern musical, one can enjoy the magic of musical triumphs.
Wine and Food Festival (September in Udine)
Wines, food, events and sights to tempt the senses, fill the program of this festival, which takes place every year in Udine. The historical downtown area is transformed into a showcase of the best products of this ancient land. Farmers, craftsmen and artists offer their wares: the best wines and brandies, San Daniele ham, Montasio cheese, the typical cakes of the eastern hills, - the Gubana (a delicious pastry and candy roll), honey, pottery and art objects, woodwork and wrought-iron items, fine jewellery, exhibitions, various publications of scholars... Endless opportunities! Concerts, theatre performances, meetings and conferences complete the picture of this cultural bonanza.
Carsic Wedding (August)
Among the most important and famous events of the region, is the Nozze Carsiche (Carsic Wedding). It takes place every 2 years, on last Sunday of August, in the Monrupino district. The celebration begins one week before the wedding with the party for the "husband-to-be" and the "wife-to-be". At night, people get together and dance in the typical way of this festival. The partying reaches its climax on Sunday, the day of the wedding. In the morning, the guests, wearing traditional dress take part in the wedding parade. They walk towards Col, first, and then to Monrupino, where the ceremony takes place in a small church. When the wedding is over, the parade goes back to Col. There a typical brunch is served to the participants. In the afternoon, people start dancing and part until the night falls.
