The Brunello from
Montalcino is a grand red wine, noble and seductive, which is born
in the heart of the hills around Siena.
The Brunello di Montalcino is a unique case. It is one of the most
important in the world with an exact date and place of birth and,
even more rare, a royal author and inventor. It is true that the
wines of Montalcino were noted in the English court in the
seventeenth century, but these wines were white. In fact, they
came from the Moscadello grape and were not comparable to today's
Brunello, a noble wine with a great personality.
The creation of the famous vineyards in Montalcino and the
consequent Brunello was the work of one man, Ferruccio
Biondi-Santi, whose patient efforts, first in the vineyard and
then in the wine cellar, first brought this wine to light in 1888.
It was the first Italian wine to obtain the DOC guarantee. The
most highly valued bottles are compared to the French "gran
cru".
Brunello is a sub-variation of the "sangiovese" vine,
the vine from which the most important Tuscan red wines are made.
How can we explain the sublime quality of the wines found here? It
is, simply put, the perfect maturation which the
"sangiovese" achieves in this area. The combination
of warmth and light which gives
the Brunello fullness,
richness
and intensity with |
|
which few other sangiovese wines can compete.
The
Brunello is the only Tuscan wine whose "sangiovese" was
always historically bottled alone. The Brunello is a particularly strong wine for its high grade of
alcohol and for its long ageing time, which regardless of the
prescriptions of the head of production is, in many cases, more
than ten years.
