This Musical Band was formed in February 2000 with the precise aim of contributing to the diffusion of musical culture and promoting the exchange of friendships within the Istituzione Comunale per la Cultura “Clara Schumann” in Collesalvetti (province of Leghorn), in that it is an expression of the school’s Band Exercises Class. The ideal continuation of the old Collesalvetti musical band, which disappeared many years ago, the band stands out for its non-traditional composition with respect to more traditional musical bands, and for its openness toward music of all types of traditional and formation, in so far as the band, by definition, aims at cultural growth, the safeguarding of traditions, and the socialisation and didactic education that come from playing together.
The Banda di Collesalvetti may indeed be defined, for all intents and purposes, not as a traditional band, but rather as a veritable "Wind Orchestra", that is, an instrumental group based principally on wind and percussion instruments, with a precise and outlined structure that determines its typology, balance, timbre. This type of group is widespread and consolidated in many European music instituted, particularly in Spain, Germany and Holland, and in all major American Universities and in Japan. In Italy, in recent years, this type of group has been founded in a few Regions, especially in the North (Lombardy, Val d'Aosta, Trentino Alto-Adige, Piedmont, Veneto) and within the major Conservatories of Music. In Tuscany, the Banda Musicale di Collesalvetti represents one of the very few bands of this type, for the moment the only such band in the Province of Leghorn. For this reason, the ranks of the band are filled not only by students and ex-students of the Istituzione Schumann, but also by young students of the main Conservatories of the so-called “vast area”, as well as by professional musicians, teachers, graduates and even mere music lovers with a healthy team spirit and the desire to have some fun. This means that the tendency toward qualitative growth and the interest in our band walk inseparably hand in hand.
